How Do I Know Whether My Fireplace Is Safe for Use?
A chimney is required for a working fireplace to allow dangerous combustion gases to escape your home. Most chimneys in the UK are over 100 years old, and many are no longer safe to use. Before you light your fire, it’s essential that you make sure your chimney is safe to use.
Who Inspects A Chimney?
A qualified chimney sweep! The role of a chimney sweep has evolved over time, and it’s possible that we’re the only profession that works with chimneys on a daily basis.
But what can you expect from a chimney inspection?
Step 1: We sweep the chimney. A dirty chimney, in addition to being a fire hazard, might conceal cracks or combustible materials.
Step 2: We inspect the fireplace. The fireplace or stove must be examined to ensure that it’s correctly installed and made of acceptable materials.
Step 3: We examine the flue. A CCTV chimney inspection on the inside of the flue looks for structural damage and things that shouldn’t be in the chimney but are regularly found. This includes cable, piping, joists, and so on.
Step 4: We give a visual examination of the chimney stack. The pots and cowl may be out of place or in poor shape.
Step 5: We perform a smoke test. Your chimney sweep may recommend a Smoke Test 1 or 2 depending on the kind of fireplace, the fuel used, and how long it’s been since the chimney was used. You can find out more about the different tests here.
What Happens Next?
The fireplace will be given the all-clear, or some repair work may be necessary. Your sweep will provide an insurance certificate or a report outlining the necessary work to make the fireplace/chimney safe. The sweep will also provide recommendations on best practices and safe operations.
Is It A Legal Requirement To Line The Chimney?
If the original chimney is deemed dangerous and is leaking, it must be lined before use. A smaller diameter flue is necessary for some appliances, but if the chimney is safe to use, no liner is needed.
Am I Allowed To Use A Fire?
Yes, all types of fire are permitted. Certain fuels are prohibited in Smoke Controlled Areas (like London). A genuine Victorian fireplace can be used as long as you use the approved fuel.
What About Gas Fire Servicing?
Once the chimney has been given the thumbs-up, if you have a gas fire fitted, a qualified Gas Safe engineer will need to service the appliance itself. Many sweeps aren’t equipped to handle this task.
What Should You Do Next?
Having a professional evaluate your fireplace on a yearly basis is the best way to guarantee it’s safe to use, regardless of whether it’s powered by wood or gas. When your fireplace isn’t properly maintained, it may lead to a variety of dangerous situations, including fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, and poisonous gases.
